Michael Jackson arrives in Japan for 'fan appreciation' events

    The Associated Press
    Published: March 4, 2007
TOKYO: Smiling and waving to screaming fans, Michael Jackson arrived in Japan on Sunday for his second visit here in recent years to host an exclusive party where fans get to spend 30 seconds with the pop icon for US$3,500 (€2,700) a pop.

Jackson made his first official foray back into the spotlight after his acquittal on child molestation charges in June 2005 with an appearance in Tokyo to accept an MTV Japan award last year.

A relaxed-looking Jackson in trademark sun glasses and black leather jacket was ushered by guards past hundreds of screaming Japanese fans at Narita Airport on Sunday afternoon, some carrying signs that read "We love Michael" and "Welcome to Japan."

At the VIP party, guests will get to mingle with Jackson, spending 30 seconds to one minute each of exclusive face time with the Gloved One, according to organizers. It was unclear whether the star will perform any songs.

While in Tokyo, the star will also host a fan art contest for Japanese who cannot afford VIP tickets, organizer Broderick Morris said in an e-mail.
    Today in Culture

"Over the years, as Michael Jackson has performed in cities around the world, he has been pleased, honored, and impressed by the large amount of fan art of him," said Morris. "He would like to meet fan artists, and more fully appreciate and enjoy their creative expressions."

Three winning artists chosen by Jackson will have brunch with the star and their picture taken together.

Jackson, one of the best-selling artists of all time, has lived abroad since his acquittal, forsaking his Neverland Ranch in California for residences in Bahrain, France, and a castle in Ireland.

He told The Associated Press in January he was back in the United States, where he was widely reported to be pursuing business deals in Las Vegas. "I love Japan," he said at the time. "It is one of my favorite places in the entire world."

Jackson's VIP meet-and-greet party was scheduled for Thursday, with the fan art contest on Friday. It was not clear when Jackson would leave Japan.

Jackson, 48, is not obligated to perform at either event, and promoters refused to comment on how much he would be paid.

    Jackson greeted by Japanese fans

Michael Jackson received a warm welcome at Tokyo airport
Pop star Michael Jackson has arrived in Japan where he will meet fans who have paid up to $3,500 (£1,800) to spend a minute in his company.
It is unclear whether the 48-year-old will also perform at the event, which is due to take place on Thursday.

Jackson made his first official appearance in Japan after being cleared of child molestation charges in 2005.

Earlier this year, the singer said that Japan is "one of my favourite places in the entire world".

"My fans in Japan helped me achieve historic milestones in the music industry," he added in a rare interview with the Associated Press news agency in January.

    Disappointed

Jackson is also attending a fan art contest in Tokyo for those who are unable to afford tickets to the "platinum VIP" party, which was originally scheduled for December.

The winning artists will have brunch with the singer and have their photographs taken with him.

Organisers have refused to comment on any fee Jackson may receive for his appearances.

Jackson, who has lived in Bahrain, France and Ireland since his court case, appeared on stage at the World Music Awards in London last November.

But he disappointed fans by singing only a few lines of We Are The World, when it was believed he would perform a version of his hit Thriller.

"Everything I am"...a video about the fans...for the fans...

While waiting for more news regarding Michael Jackson in Japan, here is an oppertunity to see how many there are of us, and the huge impact Michael Jackson has on us. Here is a message from MJJForum Member bigdb2984.

"When I started making Michael Jackson videos a few years ago, my main and only inspiration was Michael. The way he moved, the way he sang, there was no one who could touch him when it came to the impact one can have on an audience! He electrified and owned the stage when he was on it! However, during the trial...the support and love for Michael in those difficult times, was also very moving. People sacrificed their lives and jobs to go and support Michael, something which is so selfless and caring. To me, that is truly inspirational, and that is what gave me the idea for this video... I wanted to show the relationship, the love, the connection, that Michael Jackson has with his fans, and us too, with him. In the good and the bad, we are there for one another, to be each others strength, the truth in so many lies and to be the light that shines in the darkest of times.

As a special thank you and to show my complete and utter respect and love to all of you, the MJ fans...I present to you, my latest video "Everything I am"...a video about the fans...for the fans...this one is dedicated to all of you...

Michael Jackson attends Appreciation Party and To Visit Camp Zama

Michael Jackson was the guest honor at a party with about 400 people that paid $3,500 each for a buffet dinner. The show included Japanese Jackson impersonators and a chance to take pictures with Jackson. More than 100 orphans and handicapped children were invited for free. Michael did not perform, but appeared relaxed and comfortable being with his fans.

Wearing sunglasses and dressed in a black-and-gold Roberto Cavalli suit, Jackson appeared on the stage at the end of the six-hour party to read a brief thank you.
"I've been in the entertainment industry since I was 6 years old," he told AP. "As Charles Dickens says, `It's been the best of times, the worst of times.' But I would not change my career."
"While some have made deliberate attempts to hurt me, I take it in stride because I have a loving family, a strong faith and wonderful friends and fans who have, and continue, to support me," he said.

Some of the paying customers Thursday said the tickets were a bit too steep. "It is expensive," said Yoko Iizuka, a copywriter who works in Tokyo. "But I've loved his music since I was a kid."
"You can't put a price tag on this," said Jenny Sasaki, who arrived in a fur coat and sequined gown. "I love Michael Jackson, his music, his sensitivity and his humanity."

On Saturday Michael Jackson will appear at Camp Zama’s Yano Fitness Center. He’s expected to address fans, sign autographs, pose for photos and meet soldiers and their families.
"He just wants to let them know ‘America Supports You’ and so does he," said Maj. Martha Brooks, a U.S. Army Japan spokeswoman.

The Yano Fitness Center will open Saturday at 1:15 p.m., she said. Jackson is scheduled to show up at 3 p.m.

Several activities are planned, including Michael Jackson trivia contests, an imitation dance showdown and karaoke/sing-along battle of the pop icon’s songs. Jackson music videos also will be shown and two youth hip-hop dance performances will take place.

Col. Robert Waltemeyer, the U.S. Army Garrison Japan commander, is to introduce Jackson.

Jackson’s party initiated the visit, according to Maj. Jim Crawford, a U.S. Army Japan spokesman.

The event is open to all U.S. military and Defense Department personnel, Brooks said. Servicemembers in uniform with family members and guests have priority seating. Japanese master labor contract employees at Zama may escort two guests to the event. They’ll be granted walk-in access only from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Gates 1 and 4.

Michael Jackson Greets U.S. Troops in Japan

Michael Jackson greeted thousands of U.S. troops and their family members at a U.S. Army base south of Tokyo on Saturday, taking a break from days of fan appreciation parties.

About 3, 000 troops and family members gathered at Camp Zama in a fitness center. Shaking hands and exchanging words to thank them for their service he said to the crowd: "Those of you in here today are some of the most special people in the world." "It is because of you in here today, and others who so valiantly have given their lives to protect us, that we enjoy our freedom."

He also attended a ceremony at the camp held for a member of the army being promoted and put a pin on his uniform.

Jackson, 48, arrived in Japan last Sunday for his second trip in less than a year to attend parties including an extravagant gala held Thursday in Tokyo.

Sister2Sister Magazine With Michael Jackson in Japan

Jamie Foster Brown, publisher of Sister2Sister magazine, was the only press allowed to travel in Tokyo with pop star Michael Jackson and his entourage -- which included his mother, Katharine Jackson, and his three children.

"It has been amazing to see how people will risk life and limb darting in and out of traffic on foot to get a glimpse of Michael or to touch him. The fans in Japan literally inhale him," Jamie said. "He is very accommodating ... very happy, kissing and hugging folks and letting them hold him and hug him."
