Wiki - IP Address

  • This page is only a draft
What is it?
It is a sequence of 4 numbers, with a value between 0 and 255, which identifies users connected to the internet. Simplifying, an IP address can be viewed as the equivalent of a street address of devices connected to the network (users' PC or servers where the sites are).
Only a Police department can trace back from an IP address to user's personal information, such as name and address. The fools who risk phrases such as "careful, I have your IP", must be certainly ignored; their threats have no effect.
It is recalled that in each case, on any forum of the network, is strictly forbidden to publish IP addresses.

Who can view it and what is it for?
The Ip address is shown to he administrators and the global moderators of the forum. To find an IP address of a user, he must have written at least one message in the forum or in the tagboard in which you are adminsitrator or moderator.

In the posts, you can find at the bottom right of the post, the IP address that the user had when he wrote the message.
In the tagboard there is "IP", next to the "x" to delete message, which brings to a page from which you can view informations about IP address (whois).
In the logs you see the IP address (still in complete form) of the author of a given action.
In the users list, in the column "Registration date", the IP address with which the user is registered for the service.

Only the Founder can see an entire IP address to help with the Ban by IP.
The administrators and the global moderators, instead, will see only part of the IP.

On ForumFree, ForumCommunity and BlogFree the IP is only useful to detect fake (dual users, who sell themselves off as others) and to ban those annoying users who still bother after an initial ban by nickname.

Same IP address
Two accounts with the same IP address may be motivated by one of the following cases:
  • The same person using different accounts
  • Two people using two different PC but the same telephone line
  • Two people living in the same area and using a Fastweb connection
  • Two or more users connecting via Proxy
